IVF: A Powerful Tool

June 6, 2022

During the past 50 years technological advances in the field of bovine reproduction have led to some dramatic changes in the way cattle look, reproduce, perform, and even taste. Artificial Insemination (AI) and conventional Embryo Transfer (ET) are two of the main tools used by progressive producers to accelerate genetic improvement within their herds. However, recently many producers have introduced In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) into their reproductive programs. Early on, IVF struggled to establish itself as a legitimate technology because embryo production and pregnancy rates were low, which made the cost of a live calf unacceptable to most. At that point…

Fresh Ship Q&A

June 6, 2022

Q: What is Trans Ova Genetics’ Fresh Ship Program?  A: As the application of IVF technology continues to grow, Trans Ova Genetics understands that in order to fully meet the needs of our clients, we need to bring this technology even closer to clients’ farms.   Trans Ova Genetics’ Fresh Ship program is exactly as its name implies. In Vitro Fertilization & Embryo Transfer: A Comparison  (Small Ruminant)

June 6, 2022

Many breeders have elite females from which they can market valuable genetics and offspring. With the use of advanced reproductive technologies, more offspring can be propagated to help multiply the success of breeding and marketing programs. While many breeders are familiar with embryo transfer (ET), an increasing number of breeders are implementing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) into their reproductive programs.  Embryo Transfer:  Conventional (in vivo) ET involves specific hormonal treatment (with follicle stimulating hormone) of donor females to cause multiple follicles to ovulate. The donors are bred using artificial insemination (AI), or naturally covered by a buck, following superovulation after…

IVF Q&A – Small Ruminant

June 6, 2022

What is In Vitro Fertilization? In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process of creating embryos from oocytes (unfertilized egg cells) by fertilizing them with semen in a Petri dish. Oocytes are first collected from the ovaries of donors by laparoscopically guided follicular aspiration. They are then matured in a Petri dish and fertilized 20-24 hours later. Conventional or sexed-frozen semen may be used for fertilization. Oocytes then develop in an incubator for six days, at which point the resulting viable embryos are transferred into recipients. What results can be expected on each IVF cycle? Results vary with each donor, but…
